An Apple A Day.....

A is for Apple...............  Lots and lots of apples.  Walk into any grocery store today and there will be piles of apples right at the door.

No, we didn't get our apples at the grocery store.  We went to the orchard and picked our own.  Or rather the husband did the picking and I just took pictures.

Some fall to the ground.

In piles like jewels shining."

We came home with 15 pounds of apples  -  most of which went into a mile high apple pie.

What I did buy at the grocery store were two shiny red pomegranates.

The name pomegranate derives from medieval Latin pōmum "apple" and grānātum "seeded".  Sometimes they are called Indian apples.

The pomegranate is opened by scoring it with a knife and breaking it open, the arils (seed casings) are separated from the peel and white pulp membranes.

The entire seed is consumed raw, though the watery, tasty aril is the desired part.  The juice of the fruit can either be very sweet or sour but most are moderate in taste.

My first taste made me pucker up.  I wasn't sure if I wanted another bite but by the third bite I found the sweet part.

All these red apples are going to be linked at Sue Loves Cherries because Wednesday is Rednesday.

  1. I get apples at a nearby farmer's market, but I wish there were orchards around so I could pick them from the tree! Not many in Texas!! That's a gorgeous pic of the one in the tree!

  2. Wish I could have gone along, I would have helped pick! If you made a 15 lb. pie does that equal a 15 lb weight gain when you eat it with cinnamon ice cream!?

  4. I haven't seen any orchards in Florida but did buy four beauty's at the market yesterday. I grew up with pomegranates growing in the area. It was always a treat and even now they always taste sweetly tangy to me. I peel from the outside carefully to get started and then break it into pieces to keep as many seeds whole as possible. Happy Rednesday!

  5. had news that USA like our Honey crisps apples. I used to love going out to pick apples. Now, I have an apple tree, I don't pick them because I have to compete with the birds.
